Abstract The study of mass change at the electrode surface can provide important informations about interfacial process. When properly interpreted, the results may help to elucidate the reaction mechanism. Thus, issues such as adsorption of electroactive species, formation and adsorbates oxidation, and charge transfer processes and their dependence on the potential can be assessed. The onset of instabilitieskinetics in electrochemical systems, particularly during the electro-oxidation of small organic molecules has been subject of several studies. In this context, this project aims to study the surface mass variation during the kinetic instabilities associated with the electro-oxidation of small organic molecules by means of an electrochemical quartz cristal nanobalance. The investigation of these processes should proceed on platinum catalysts, gold and palladium. From these experiments is expected to obtain quantitative data that contribute to the understanding of the surface chemistry, i.e. formation, desorption and reaction adsorbates, present in these systems.
