Abstract

Spatial-temporal patterns of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) are known to be an important factor to predict some poor health outcomes of inhabitants in a urban area. In general, the number of monitoring centers measuring PM in a certain region is less than what is needed to reach the appropriate resolution. Statistical models for data such as Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and Land-Use variables are used to fill in the gap. Our objective is to develop models that allow the estimation of PM concentration with the desirable resolution and to use the results to evaluate the impact on health outcomes of people living in the metropolitan area of São Paulo, Brazil. We intend to collaborate with investigators from the Harvard School of Public Health who have experience in High resolution AOD retrievals.
