Abstract

The problem of décadence was, as Nietzsche claims, in 1888, the one which occupied the center of his philosophical life. From 1883 on the philosopher develops, with a direct influence of the literary critic Paul Bourget and some French writers as Baudelaire, Flaubert and Goncourt, a « theory of décadence » which will be finally reached in "The case of Wagner". From several Phostumous Fragments and other books that follow the later phase of Nietzsche's thought (1883-1888) it is possible to investigate his theorizations on décadence which were related with the French literature from his time. Thus, it can be realized that the theory of artistic décadence constitutes the center of Nietzsche's diagnosis of modernity, as it appears in his later thought. This doctoral research aims, then, to investigate the theory of décadence in Nietzsche, especially in its aesthetic aspect, and considering a study of relevant French references, as it was already noted by the critical works as central to the nietzschean diagnosis of decay in his time, the modernity of the late nineteen century. In this perspective, the aim is to show that a thorough investigation of Nietzsche's diagnosis of the décadence of art constitutes itself as a straight path to a deeper understanding of his critique of modernity.
