Abstract

Illicit drugs users (IDU) are acknowledged to be a special risk group for Staphylococcus. In this population it has been described the first community associated Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA). However, most part of the studies relating S. aureus and MRSA to drug addiction approach intravenous substances users. In Brazil, most of dependents are inhalational drugs users, especially Crack. Part of these dependents have multiple passages at rehab clinics. Another relevant institutionalized group in Brazil are patients with long term hospitalizations at psychiatrist hospitals. Despite of psychiatrist reform an it's emphasis in deinstitutionalization, social vulnerability aspects and family abandonment still determine the living of patients at psychiatrist hospitals. The two groups above described are exposed to different epidemiological pressure and are as much as in great risk of invasive staphylococcic disease as in strategic position for maintenance and dissemination of isolates. This subproject aims to identify the prevalence and predictor factors of S. aureus and MRSA carrying in hospitalized IDUs at Serviço Hospitalar de Referência de Álcool e Drogas (SHRAD) and patients living at Hospital Psiquiátrico Cantídeo de Moura Campos, both located in Botucatu-SP, Brazil. It also intends to characterize through molecular methods the clonality and methicillin resistance of recovered isolates in nasal vestibule and oropharynx culture. (AU)
