Abstract

The object of study of this research is the social hierarchies in Bananal (state of São Paulo, Brazil) in the 19th century. By crossing the "Inventários" of the slaveholders who grew coffee with the "Inventário de Bens Rústicos" and the one from the "Registro Paroquial de Terras", we intend to examine the slaveholding structure, the demographic slavery profile, the agrarian structure, the productive capacity of farms, the exploitation of slave labor and the credit market. Thus, we aim at understanding the importance of the lands, slaves, coffee plantations, and credit in the process of wealth constitution and hierarchies in the slave society from Bananal.
