Abstract

In recent years, a number of studies have focused on investigating the function and location of structures in the brain related to the pathophysiological responses that take place during endotoxemia, but little is known about how natural drugs can interact with thermoregulatory responses during immune challenge. This project aims to broaden the knowledge about the action of new drugs in neurochemical mechanisms involved in the regulation of Tb, in particular in relation to the systemic endotoxin injection. Citral is an essential oil present in several medicinal plants, with important antimicrobial, gastroprotective and anti - inflammatory effects. We will assess the effects of citral in the regulation of Tb, using the model most accepted by the world scientific community for the study of thermoregulation during systemic inflammation, i.e., LPS-induced fever. In addition, we will seek to unravel the mechanisms responsible for this putative anti-inflammatory effect through the measurement of plasma cytokines: interleukin IL-1², IL-6 and TNF-± and together with PGE2 in the hypothalamus. The results of this project are expected to be important, bringing new insights into new drugs of natural origin. This project should be carried out in collaboration with the group led by Professor Clélia Akiko Hiruma-Lima (UNESP Botucatu). (AU)
