Abstract

Bioactive Glasses (BAG) are the newest materials studied for the adjunctive treatment of osteomyelitis, especially for their osteoconductive, angiogenic, and, most of all, antimicrobian activities, setting them apart of currently available materials. This study is an in vitro analysis of the antimicrobian activity of BAG compared to Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which is, currently, the most widely used material during the surgical treatment of osteomyelitis. In vitro antibacterial activity of BAG-S53P4 against osteomyelitis-derived bacterial isolates stored Santa Casa de São Paulo was evaluated by means of time kill curves, with colony counts performed after 24, 48 and 72 hours of incubation. Differences in colonies counts between BAG-S53P4 and inert glass were evaluated by means of two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni's t test. (AU)
