Abstract

This project aims to study the diversity of one of the major taxonomic bottlenecks of the Neotropical ichthyofauna, the genus Trichomycterus (Siluriformes, Trichomycteridae), with 184 nominal species distributed throughout mainly of South America cis- and trans-Andina. Nowadays, the taxonomy of Trichomycterus is both incomplete and confusing, with many species not described and a multiplicity of forms already described although with uncertain validity. There is a consensus that a genus's complete review is an unexecutable task now. This is because of the magnitude of the resources needed to do it. In the other hand, it is possible a real progress by using a regional strategy, focused on individual hydrographic basins. In this study, we propose to study in detail the composition of Trichomycterus species in the Doce river basin, which the main stream was recently devastated by Mariana's tragedy. Thus, a detailed analysis of the phenotypic variations will be done concomitantly with a barcoding analysis (COI). The comparison between the results of the two types of data and their projection in the geographical context will allow a detailed evaluation of the diversity of the genus in the Doce river basin universe. A nomenclatural investigation will define the available names applicable to the known species, with considerations of priority and synonymies. The species without prior nomenclatural record shall be described as new species in publications derived from the thesis dissertation. The data, both morphological and molecular, will be obtained mainly from already available ichthyological collections, in addition to some point campaigns to supply key locations that are sub-sampled nowadays. The results of this study will be important to define adequate evidence standards to recognize and diagnose Trichomycterus species, in order to evaluate its diversity and to assist in the conservation and recovery efforts of the Doce river.
