Abstract

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important non-invasive tool for the evaluation of several conditions. In drug-resistant epilepsies, surgical outcome depends largely on complete removal of the epileptogenic region, making MRI crucial for surgical planning. Cortical dysplasias, one of the most common pathological findings in young drug-resistant patients, can remain undetected by MRI, even using the most modern protocols in 3T machines. Consequently, a significant percentage of patients fail to achieve postsurgical seizure control. Thereby, it is important to optimize MRI to detect more subtle pathological changes as well as to define the specific pathological substrates of the MR signals. Our aim with the present research proposal is to identify the histologic substrates of the different MRI protocols, and to improve the detection of cortical dysplasias by quantitative higher field (3T and 7T) MRI.
