Abstract

There are conclusive evidences of selenium (Se) deficiency in Brazilian soils, which can reflect on Se deficiency in plants, animals and humans. Modern cultivars show low concentration of micronutrient in grains, therefore, is needed to increase Se concentration in edible parts of plants. This study aims to evaluate the influence of Se on yield and nutritional quality of cowpea beans. In addition, the establishment of optimal levels of Se application in Brazilian field conditions will be performed. To achieve these purposes, the following experiments will be conducted. Experiment 1: Based on our former studies, the characterization of genotypic variation on Se uptake by cowpea plants and accumulation of Se in grains will be performed. In this study, 30 genotypes of cowpea will be cultivated in presence and absence of Se (0 and 0.3 mg kg-1). The grains will be collected for nutritional analysis. Experiment 2: The agronomic biofortification will be evaluated by application of 2 sources of Se (selenate and selenite) via application of 7 levels of Se (0; 2,5; 5,0; 7,5; 10,0; 20,0; e 40,0 g ha-1) applied on the soil. At the end of experiments 1 and 2, the nutrient concentration, Se bioavailability, aminoacids, protein, sugar, phytate, myo-inositol (IP5 and IP6) will be analyzed. The better understanding of key factors involved on genotypic variation and selenium accumulation in plants in response to fertilizer, can provide powerful information for plant breeding, mineral nutrition, fertilization, and for production of better nutritional quality food.
