Abstract

The development of advanced polymer composites technology has created new opportunities by combining high performance structures with high mechanical strength, rigidity and low specific mass, favoring the evolution of strategic systems in several sectors, among them the aerospace sector. The reinforcement with carbon fiber makes the properties even more attractive to the area. Special thermoplastic matrices have been studied in the last years for the incorporation of these in the advanced composites, because they present advantages such as: greater time of storage of raw material; Ease of repair and possibility of recycling in relation to thermosetting composites. One of the main problems in the use of these composites is the effective union for the integration of components. Studies show that bonding by the electrical resistance welding technique is one of the most effective processes for bonding composites, as well as requiring little surface preparation and being an easy method. The present project aims to evaluate the impact of the environmental effects involving humidity, temperature and ultraviolet radiation on the thermal and mechanical performances of carbon fiber reinforced polypropylene (PPS) welded composites with aeronautical applications. After welding, these composites will be conditioned in hygrothermal and UV radiation chambers and the environmental effects will be evaluated from mechanical tests, thermal and morphological analyzes.
