Abstract

One of the main difficulties in using composites is how to join the material with a good adhesion. The ultrasonic welding joint technique has been one of the most promising ways to promote this union, mainly in the aeronautical area, for being a fast process, suitable for thermoplastic composites and non-permanent inclusions in the region of welded interface for composites reinforcements with carbon fiber or glass fiber. There are very relevant works of ultrasonic welding in thermoplastic composites, but this technique is not fully understood. This project also aims to evaluate the impact of environmental effects involving humidity, temperature and ultraviolet radiation in the thermal and mechanical performances of welded PPS composites (poly (phenylene sulphide)). After welding, these composites will be conditioned into hygrothermal and UV radiation chambers and the environmental effects will be evaluated from mechanical tests (CST, ILSS and Lap shear tests), thermal analysis (DMA and TMA) and by optical microscopy.
