Abstract

The possibility of minimizing enamel changes after tooth whitening would be of benefit to the patient. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the addition of sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) associated with 0.05% sodium fluoride, 35% hydrogen peroxide and the effect of daily use of fluoride dentifrice (1100 ppm F) during the experiment, on the hardness of the dental enamel. Bovine enamel blocks (4 mm x 4 mm, n = 40) will be selected through the initial surface hardness (SHI) and divided into four groups (n = 10), according to the treatments: 1) Hydrogen peroxide 35 % (PH); 2) PH + 0.05% NaF (PH/F); 3) PH + 0.05% NaF + 0.25% TMP (PH/F/TMP) and 4) HP Blue 35% (FGM - Dental Products: HP). The gels will be applied once, during 3 sessions of 40 minutes/session, every 7 days, totaling 21 days. Throughout the experiment the blocks will be treated with a slurry of dentifrice in the concentration of 1100 ppm F (1: 3), 2x/day. Between sessions of treatment and use of dentifrices the blocks will remain in artificial saliva that will be changed daily. Then the final surface hardness (SHF) and the percentage of surface hardness hardness loss (% SH) will be determined. Data will be submitted to ANOVA followed by Student-Newman-Keuls test (p < 0.05) if they present normal and homogeneous distribution. Otherwise, the Kruskal-Wallis analysis and the Student-Newman-Keuls test (p <0.05) will be used. (AU)
