Abstract

Between the XIV and XV centuries, the monarchs of the crowns of Castile and Portugal bestowed, during the court meetings, a series of general laws concerning the drinking, eating and dressing of their subjects. Conconmitantly, religious writers, ecclesiastics, nobles and monarchs, whose writings circulated in these kingdoms, attempted to correct current faults and ensure virtuous practices. These writings expressed, according to the monarchs, the interest in amending the conduct of the kingdom men concerning the activities they deemed necessary to stimulate a virtuous life, as well as for the control of the kingdom expenses and maintenance of the order. Taking this into account, the sinful and offensive excesses in such practices and how to fight them - through admonition, penitence, punishment and penalty - were what received most of the attention from scholars and governments. The present project aims to examine the relationship between the expenses and revenue of the kingdom and the values brought up to interline the decisions made in XIVth and XVth Centuries Castilian and Portuguese courts. Considering this aim, this study will thoroughly explain the articulations between the understanding of sin and delict which regulated drinking, eating and dressing habits in a time when moral was expressed through general rules and philosophic-pedagogic treaties rather than the following centuries' Manuals of Civility.
