Abstract There are many disciplines which try to understand the field of collective action in the public arena. The strategies used to recruit new members and keep them engaged are fundamental for understanding social movements, participation, defense and protests. In the Brazilian context, the expressions militancy and activism are often used interchangeably. The study we conducted, explores the hypothesis that militancy and activism are different ways of producing collectives engaged in social movements. Such strategies organize and direct collective action in different ways, and can be characterized as distincts phenomenons. The internship at the The Ph.D. Program in Sociology at City University of New York aims to: a) collecting and review studies on Social Movements, protests and collective action in American Sociology; b) carry out, under the supervision of a respected researcher, immersion in the literature on contentious politics; c) present and discuss the results found during the research, thus allowing their qualification; d) receive guidance from Professor James Jasper. The internship will last six months and include the data collection stage envisaged by the research carried out in Brazil. It is expected that this activity will yield a cataloging of relevant publications on the subject in American literature and data collection in order to assess the main hypothesis of this study.
