Abstract

Staurozoa is a class of benthic cnidarians, with ~50 species. They are widely distributed, but most occur in temperate and polar waters. The unique characteristics of Staurozoa, added to its evolutionary position, make macro-evolutionary and biogeographic approaches particularly interesting. The general objective of this study is to infer the biotic and abiotic processes that led to the diversification of Staurozoa. To fulfill this objective, we will use the recent Phylogenetic hypothesis of Staurozoa as a basis to investigate its origin and temporal diversification and the biogeographic events that influenced its spatio-temporal evolution. Finally, we will infer how the ecological niche of the Staurozoa has changed over time and how macroevolutionary processes have led to the current distribution of species in the group. (AU)
