Abstract

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are produced in the human body by biochemical processes, what leads to the hypothesis that a distinct profile of substances can be presented in case of normal and pathological conditions. Once produced by human metabolism, these compounds are excreted into breath and body fluid such as saliva, blood, sweat and urine. The analysis of VOCs in biological samples has been regarded as a valuable tool for biomarker discovery through the detection of specific compounds. Different analytical techniques have been used for this purpose, most of them are based on chromatographic methods. Gas chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer (GC-MS) can be a suitable method for determination and identification of substances, nevertheless, the low level of VOCs in biological samples requires the use of a preconcentration technique. Usually micro-extraction techniques such as solid phase microextraction (SPME) has been utilized for the enrichment of VOCs. The present project focuses on VOCs in urine samples from cancer patients with urinary tract diseases. Additionally, samples from healthy control will be examined. Two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) coupled to mass spectrometry with time-of-flight analyzer (TOF-MS) will be performed for acquisition of a full profile of VOCs and sensitive measurements. The main objective of the project is the investigation of VOCs existing in urine samples as potential cancer biomarkers. (AU)
