Abstract

The objective of this study will be to analyze the relationship between the work above the critical torque (W') and muscle strength. Male subjects, with ages between 20 and 35 years, will participate of this study and will perform the following procedures, in different days: 1) Familiarization to the isokinetic dynamometer; 2) One test of maximal isometric contractions to determine the isometric peak torque (IPT) and one all-out test with maximal intermittent isometric contractions for the determination of W' of knee extensor muscles (KE); 3) Part of the subjects will perform a training program aiming to improve muscle strength of KE, with two training sessions per week, during three weeks. Part of the subjects will participate of the control group, who will not perform the training. Before and after the training period, the same procedures of item 2 will be performed. All tests will be performed on different days to recover from one test to another, at the same time of day (± 2 h) and in random order. The data will be expressed as mean ± SD. The existence of normality of the data will be verified by the Shapiro-Wilk test. The comparison of PT and W' values will be performed by the Student t test for paired data. The analysis of the effect of training on IPT and W' will be performed by Anova Two-way, complemented by Bonferroni post hoc test. The correlation between IPT and W' will be performed by Pearson correlation test. The significance level will be set at p d 0.05. (AU)
