Abstract

Scales (or macrotrichia) in Lepidoptera are cuticular projections with variable functions, such as impermeability, aid in aerodynamics during flight and visual or chemical sexual communication. The scales responsible to chemical sexual communication are named as "scent organs". Scent organs can be located in many parts of the lepidopterous body, being mostly common on wings. In Brazil, few studies have been developed focusing on macro and ultrastructural morphologies of the scent organs in butterflies and, until the moment, with no phylogenetic approach. The purpose of the present project is to perform the first morphological comparative study among wing scent organs of Satyrinae in an evolutionary context, mainly focusing in Brazilian species, in addition to investigate, from macro and ultrastructural evidence, homology between such structures, as well as its taxonomic value for delimitation of genera and species. The results obtained from the present study are expected to provide subsidies for a better comprehension of the internal relationships in Satyrinae. (AU)
