Abstract

Biofilm formation on teeth and mucous membranes is considered the main factor associated with the development of oral infections. Topical antimicrobials such as chlorhexidine (CHO) are used for decontamination of caries, periodontal pockets, and oral decontamination prior to surgical procedures, but they might promote adverse effects in hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity. Additionally, they may have the ability to promote resistance in micro-organisms. Thus, the search for alternative antimicrobial treatments such as photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is important in dental sciences. Previous studies have suggested that curcumin can be a promising photosensitizer for PDI, but there are still some aspects that need to be further assessed as, for example, its efficacy in biofilms formed naturally in different individuals as well as the use of this photosensitizer in a biocompatible formulation to hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity. The present study aims to assess the effectiveness of curcumin mediated - PDI incorporated in a biocompatible formulation in order to eliminate multi-species in situ biofilms. The in situ model will allow analysis of PDI effectiveness to reduce the viability of the biofilms, as well as the possible interference of the particular microbiota on the PDI effect. (AU)
