Abstract

The scaling and root planing (SRP) as a part of the non-surgical periodontal treatment is considerate as gold standart for the treatment of the periodontal disease. However, in some cases, such as in deep pockets or sites presenting proximal furcation, SRP may not be sufficient to dope with the periodontal infection. These situations may lead to periodontal pockets persistence - e.i. residual pockets. There are few studies that evaluate treatment protocols of residual pockets in patients presenting Generalized Aggressive Periodontitis (GAgP) who have already received some kind of therapeutic approach. Just few studies aimed to elucidate the periodontal regeneration process in these individuals, though. Thus, the aim of the present study is to evaluate additional therapy approaches in order to deal with two types conditions. The first part of the study aims to assess whether repeated applications of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT) are equivalent to surgical approach in the treatment of residual pockets of single-rooted teeth. The second part of this study aims to evaluate whether the use of enamel matrix derivative proteins (EMD) performs better than just surgical approach in the treatment of furcation defects on upper molars.
