Abstract

Photoacoustics is an area of great and still increasing interest. Photoacoustic imaging is now attracting more investigation since it can provide physio-chemical information of tissue non-invasively. In imaging physics, x-ray acoustic imaging is presented as a new tool that have been discussed for radiation detection during external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), providing opportunities to be applied in dosimetry. It is known that multi-wavelength photoacoustic imaging adds molecular information to photoacoustic imaging, obtaining concentrations of endogenous chromophores such as hemoglobin, but more specifically whether it is bound to oxygen or not. In this context, photoacoustic-based images can potentially be employed during cancer treatment, for example, to follow tumor response to EBRT and dosimetry; both of them are important issues for the cancer centers. The main goal of this proposal is to explore the use of multi-wavelength photoacoustic imaging to follow the tumor's response to the EBRT. In addition, generating x-ray acoustic imaging during irradiation for dosimetry. (AU)
