Abstract

The aim of this project is to explore how Latin language and literature kept being studied until XVII and XVIII centuries, the same way it was reborn three hundred years before, in the sense of a true revaluation of classic studies and an important qualification of the scholars and, consequently, of methods and researches. Regarding this, it seemed convenient to make a more precise clipping for one of the most important regions in Europe focusing then the attention on the Italian religious and academic Jacopo Facciolati (1682-1769), who had completed his studies and had encouraged many young people's studies through Seminary of Padova's professor and books. Therefore, to that end, the intention is analyzing, translating and commenting Jacopo's inaugural speeches, made from 1711 to 1713 - and assembled for the first time at a publication in 1725 - in front of most cultured and influent people from North Italy and in front of talented promising young people which were there because of the beginning of a new academic year. Those inaugural speeches are orationes ad Grammaticam, ad Humanitatem and ad Rhetoricam, with which Facciolati pursued, on the one hand, to argue for the importance and relevance of learning Latin with perfection and, on the other hand, to think about simpler and more efficient ways of accomplishing this objective.
