Abstract

This study aims to evaluate fluoride (F) concentrations in saliva, as well as analyze F intake after brushing with dentifrices containing different fluoride concentrations (0, 550 e 1100 ppm F, neutral pH), applied on different quantities (approximately 0,04, 0,16 e 0,32 g). Volunteers (n=24, 2-3 years old) will be randomly assigned into 6 experimental groups, according to the possible combinations of dentifrices and quantities. The children will use a placebo dentifrice during the week. On the 7th day, samples of unstimulated saliva will be collected before brushing (baseline), and 5, 15, 30, 60 e 120 minutes after brushing with one of the possible treatment combinations (amount of dentifrice x F concentration in product), following double-blind, crossover protocol. The amount of fluoride ingested during toothbrushing will be also assessed, through the analysis of fluoride concentration present in expectorant and remaining on the toothbrush (which will be subtracted from the amount of F initially placed on the toothbrush). Samples will be analyzed with an ion-specific electrode after HMDS-facilitated diffusion. The results will be analyzed for normality (Kolmogorov-Smirnov) and homogeneity (Barlett); if the use of parametric tests is possible, data will be analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test. Otherwise, non-parametric tests will be used. A significance level of 5% will be assumed. (AU)
