Abstract

The involuntary ingestion of dentifrice by children under six years old is a risk factor for the development of dental fluorosis. The development of dentifrices with reduced fluoride concentrations (F) would contribute to decrease the ingestion of the ion by children which still do not have total control of the expectoration process. Researches conduced in this laboratory showed that dentifrices with 500 µgF/g supplemented with phosphate were equally or more effective than dentifrices with 1100µgF/g regarding the reduction of the in vitro demineralization of the enamel. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of dentifrices of even lower concentrations of F supplemented with different concentrations of hexametaphosphate (HMP) on the demineralization process of the bovine enamel using a pH-cycling model. Enamel blocks will be submitted to pH-cycling alternated with treatments twice a day with dentifrices containing 250 µgF/g and 0 up to 3% of HMP. A dentifrice without addition of F and HMP (placebo), one with 500 µgF/g and other with 1100 µgF/g, both without HMP will be used for comparison, as also a commercial dentifrice (Crest, 1100ugF/g) as positive control. The percentage of surface microhardness variation, the mineral content at different enamel depths, the integrated subsurface mineral loss and the concentration of F, Ca and P in the enamel will be determined. The results will be submitted to the normality and homogeneity tests and the more suitable statistical analysis will be applied for each variable (p<0,05).
