Abstract

One of the risk factors of dental fluorosis is the utilization of fluoridated dentifrices by children below six years old. The reduction of fluoride (F) concentration in the dentifrice should be important, but it’s necessary maintain the effectiveness of a commercially dentifrice. Supplemented dentifrice with phosphate (P) and calcium showed more effective in decrease the demineralization and improve the remineralization. The aim of this study will be evaluate the effect of different phosphate concentration in dentifrice with low fluoride concentration in bovine enamel demineralization using a pH cycling model. The enamel blocks will be selected by surface microhardness (SMH). They will be subjected to a pH cycling for 7 days and treatment twice daily with dentifrice containing 500 ppmF and different concentrations of a compound containing phosphate diluted in deionized water and a dentifrice without F and P, and a control (Crest, 1100 ppmF). The percentage change of SMH (%SMH) will be calculated. The results will be subjected to a adequate statistic test (p<0,05). With this study, we hope determine the minimum P concentration which associated with low F concentration promotes the same anticariogenic action as a standard dentifrice.
