Abstract The development of materials which exhibit high surface area is of great interest in many areas of scientific research, for example in catalysis. The control of changing the physicochemical properties of catalysts allows the extension of the catalytic activity, avoiding deactivation processes, such as sintering of the active phase of the catalyst. The methodologies used to achieve this goal pass by structuring these materials through pores with dimensions defined systems. The use of the sol-gel method is suitable to obtain catalysts or catalyst supports with specific pore sizes. The use of surfactants as the tri-block copolymer Pluronic 123 appears to be quite efficient for obtaining materials with high surface area through the formation of defined pores systems. However, there are materials with superficial approaches in the literature, such as MgO. The chemical properties of this oxide is very favorable to the reforming reactions of organic compounds for the production of hydrogen. However, its low surface area is an aspect to be developed for the best catalytic activity. In this context, the systematic study of synthesis conditions for MgO with high surface area by mesoporous/macroporous formation need to be developed for efficient hydrogen abstraction. The study will also address the range of surfactants in the synthesis of the catalytic support, including P-123, F-68 and F-127. The application of these materials will be through the ethanol steam reforming for hydrogen production with copper and nickel as active phase, ie energy production by biomass resources. Furthermore, the use of advanced characterization techniques, such as absorption spectroscopy X-ray in operando conditions will be applied to elucidate the behavior of the catalysts upon the reaction.
