Abstract

Saul Kripke, in his discussion about metaphysical and epistemical notions, which contingency and apriority belong, drew attention to the fact that there are cases in which we can access contingent a priori truths, and necessary a posteriori truths. This idea became infamous in the tradition since it showed that the notions of necessity and apriority are not extensional as it was always thought: the contingent a priori was an intolerable paradox.There has been much discussion since Kripke drew attention to this fact: on the one hand, those who interpret it as a problem usually argue that Kripkes examples, when analyzed in depth, cant be considered both contingent and a priori at the same time. David Kaplan, on the other hand, not only accepts the fact that there are contingent a priori truths, but also believes that a very interesting property of his theory of indexicals is the possibility of sentences analogous to kripkean examples. Gareth Evans also argues that there is very close relation between the contingent a priori and indexicals, this would reveal a very interesting relation between indexicality and our knowledge. Motivated by Evans assertion, the objetive of this project is to study the relation between indexicality and the contingent a priori, more properly, why do indexicals seems to be necessary for the examples of the contingent a priori?
