Abstract Based on questions raised in the initial research proposal and those suggested by analysis of primary sources and field work, the objective of this project is to investigate and discuss in more detail the academic work that has been carried out on the engagement in armed movements and high-cost and high-risk movements. I try to understand how the literature has treated this type of engagement, starting from the micro and mesosociological levels, present in the initial stage of this study, now including the macro level, referring to the effects of repression on the mobilization of actors. I want to shed light on to what measure the literature helps explain the engagement of peasants and communists in the Trombas-Formoso Revolt and the Araguaia Guerilla Uprising in Brazil and how the debate among researchers into social movements and Latin America can contribute to the understanding of these struggles, mooting the possible need for distinct conceptual tools because of the specific features of the cases analyzed. Furthermore, this project is in line with the initiative recently formed by the consortium among Cebrap, Freie Universität and five other research institutions in the area of social sciences: the Meridian Institute - Latin America. Besides strengthening these institutional ties, the focus of this work on the relations of solidarity between communists and peasants is in line with the general concerns of the Institute, which are to analyze the patterns and types of conviviality of various social, cultural, political and religious actors and groups. | |
