Abstract

The use of In-Car Route Guidance and Navigation System (RGNS) has contributed significantly to several factors, among them economy, mobility and safety sensation. The literature recommends that, for maps presented in a non egocentric scheme, linear features should be labeled following the line. However, that characteristic may increase map reading time while driving. This project of research aims to design road toponymy for the place where the driver is, in a dynamic and egocentric map of RGNS, and evaluate the performance of the cartographic communication in the context of map use. The following stages to accomplish this research work are: literature review; conception of graphic designs for the toponymy roads; preparation of documents to the experiment; recruitment of drivers; configuration of technological apparatus and validation of the test environment; test; data extraction and organization; analysis of the results. It is intended to identify types of positioning for street name, located next to the car symbol, that present high performance in the process of cartographic communication, such as reduced map reading time, high number of right answers and high level of satisfaction.
