Abstract

There is a great potential for the use of lignocellulosic biomass to produce chemicals and biofuels, such as ethanol. However, it remains a challenge to increase the biomass processing performance. Many steps need to be improved to achieve this goal, and one of them is thebiomass hydrolysis. In order to increase the competitive edge of the process, it's necessary to perform the hydrolysis at high solids load and high product concentration (especially glucose). Nevertheless, the experimental evaluation of different operation strategies to achieve this condition is expensive and demands time. Thus, this project aims to develop a mathematical model to predict the enzymatic hydrolysis of biomass operating at high solids content and high product concentration. Then, the created hydrolysis model can be used to determine the best operational strategy. The mathematical modeling will be based on the experimental data obtainedby the research group (Longo, 2017) for enzymatic hydrolysis at high solids content and high product concentration (> 100 g/L). Once the model is ready, it'll be used to evaluate different operational strategies, such as multi-stage hydrolysis and fed-batch hydrolysis. (AU)
