Abstract

This master's project, combining discussions in the area of anthropology of international cooperation and gender discussions, intends to carry out a critical ethnographic analysis of of how the concept of gender appears in policies financed and managed by Norwegian international cooperation and development aid schemes aimed at indigenous peoples in the Brazilian Amazon. Particularly, it is intended to analyse the institutional challenges caused by the inclusion of the gender equality agenda within broader and more consolidated policies, such as environmental protection, for example. As it is a research that focuses on the creation of international cooperation policies, and not on their implementation, it is proposed an institutional ethnography (ESCOBAR, 1994) that aims to take experts and specialists in development policies as interlocutors. This research is expected to contribute not only to discussions in the field of development anthropology, but also to the debates on gender issues among indigenous peoples and on methodological reflections on conducting research with elites and dominant segments.
