Abstract

Polyimides are polymers with high thermal, chemical, mechanical, radiation and wear resistance. These properties, associated to other properties that can be formulated through the choice of appropriate monomers, provide them applications in various high-tech sectors. This research project aims to expand the scope of the master's project currently being developed (FAPESP process n° 2016/01754-7), using two new monomers to obtain polyimides with different properties and also introducing the development of reduced graphene oxide composites to complement the study. A two stages synthetic route developed during the masters' project will be used, which enable us to synthesize copolynaphtalimides precursors in 6 hours using mild conditions not predicted in the literature. In addition to the monomers already being used, i.e. 4,4'-(9-fluorenylidene) dianiline (FNDA), 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA), hexamethylene diamine (HMDA) and 1,5-diaminonaphthalene (DAN) will be used. Reduced graphene oxide prepared by oxidation of graphite (Hummers method) followed by reduction using hydrazine in alkaline medium will be used to prepare the nanocomposites. The nanocomposites will be prepared by in situ polymerization, mechanical mixing in solution or mechanical mixing in the melt state. The structure and properties characterization of the polymers and composites will be performed according to their solubility in organic solvents and will enable the establishment of structure-property relations, besides the evaluation of potential applications. The following techniques will be used: Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-Ray Diffraction (DRX), Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS), optical microscopy, Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis, tensile test and determination of dielectric constant.
