Abstract

World fish production has been growing steadily over the last five decades, increasing the supply of fish in food to exceed population growth by 1.6%. It is estimated that between 30-50% of all fish catches are lost at different links in the food supply chain (FAO, 2014). According to FAO (1994), for aquaculture to produce real and permanent benefits, will have to find ways of developing, increasing its yields and reducing their adverse effects. To that end, it will be necessary to identify appropriate forms of commercial and technical support, as well as special care in the management of resources and in the social and ecological assessment of regions with aquaculture potential (HENRY-SILVA and CAMARGO, 2008). The present research project proposes, through exploratory qualitative research, the identification and discussion of the factors related to the volume of discarded fish during the distribution and commercialization, than, will be possible to think about alternatives for a sustainable discard with less environmental impact, besides estimating the growth of waste following the increase in supply due to the increase in production.
