Abstract

The goal of the present study is to investigate the effect of rules on children's do-say correspondence (i.e., lying behavior). Data from 48 children from two different age groups (6- and 8-year-olds) will be collected, with each group having an approximate number of boys and girls. Data collection is in progress, and so far, 22 children participated. Participants are assigned randomly to two conditions: the rule condition (RC) and the no-rule condition (NRC). They are asked to play a guessing game based on the temptation-resistance paradigm. During the game, the experimenter leaves the child alone in the room, creating a situation that is tempting for cheating, that is, she could easily look up the target card for that round. When the experimenter returns to the room, she asks the child if she had peeked before. We, therefore, aim to investigate: a) possible age effects on lying behavior; and b) if children who are previously instructed to obey a "no lie" rule will be less likely to engage in such behavior than children who were not exposed to this rule. Preliminary results suggest that all children who cheated lied later to cover up the cheating. Next semester, data collection will be completed and all the planned data analyses will be conducted. Significant differences in the frequency of lying behavior are expected between the two conditions (with rules x no rules). (AU)
