Abstract

Climate change already affects the marine environment and one of the main effects is the increase of oceanic temperature and coastal waters. As a consequence, it can affect the stability of populations and communities in the medium and long term. In commercially exploited species, which already suffer population reduction due to anthropogenic action, climate changes tend to intensify the changes in population dynamics. This reduction of fishing stocks also brings socioeconomic consequences. In this sense the project aims to assess how the ocean water temperature increase may affect the coastal environment and population dynamics, using as model organisms the species Ucides cordatus, Menippe nodifrons and Callinectes danae. For this, we will evaluate 1) the survival and duration of larval development until zoea III stage, 2) energy expenditure rate, 3) oxygen consumption, 4) from the data generated, simulate how the average temperature increase may affect the population structure using climate models and 5) integrate scientific results with the management of coastal ecosystems (in conservation units) in a climate change scenario. With the comprehension of how changes in ocean temperatures will impact fishery stocks of model species, the results are expected to be extrapolated to other species of coastal fauna. In addition, we seek to integrate scientific results with the management of coastal ecosystems in a climate change scenario.
