Abstract

Obstructive ureteral disorders are the leading cause of chronic renal failure in neonates and young children. This is partly due to the fact that obstructive uropathy does not always present an easy diagnosis and is progressively harmful to the kidneys. It is also known that besides the damage factor being progressively worse over time, the renal recovery factor also decreases rapidly, resulting in a prognosis that worsens exponentially with the time of obstruction. Thus, the sooner the uropathy is diagnosed and treated, the better the patient's prognosis. It is not known, however, how much the damage renal obstruction is reversible between the stages of human development and how much it varies within each stage. In this context, we wish to test how the damage caused by obstructive uropathy and its reversibility are influenced by the developmental stages in which the patient is and by the duration of the obstruction at each stage. To study these questions, we will use the experimental model of the rat submitted to unilateral ureteral obstruction followed by nephrostomy. The study will be develop into three groups of different ages (neonates, young adults, and adults) and the rats will be divided in relation to unilateral ureteral obstruction time (2 or 4 weeks) before undergoing the second operation. Thus, comparisons regarding damage and reversibility of the lesion will be performed for each stage of development through histological and urinary analysis. (AU)
