Abstract

In dialogue with other women of her time, as writers, doctors, feminist militants and anarchists, the writer Júlia Lopes de Almeida (1862-1934), from Rio de Janeiro, brings a critical feminist dimension in her writing. In this research, I am concerned with the transgressions of her female characters in the novels A família Medeiros (1893), A viúva Simões (1897), A falência (1901), Cruel amor (1911), Correio da Roça (1913) and A Silveirinha (1914). I approach these resistances using Michel Foucault's concept of "Counter-Conducts", that is, the search for other ways of conducting, diverting from social normativity, and I focus on three themes of relevance in these stories: the "domesticity ideology", the desire and the feminine friendship. In addition to the notion of Counter-Conduct, I analyze these books from the Foucault's idea of "device of sexuality", focusing on the lines of escape of these characters to the captures of their bodies and their behaviors instituted by medical and legal discourses between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I also refer to the works of feminist theorists who discuss the institution of a scientific knowledge and the constitution of feminine subjectivities. (AU)
