Abstract

Tuberculosis is a disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. According to World Health Organization, 10.4 million new cases of tuberculosis were estimated in 2015, of which 480,000 are multidrug-resistant. Compared with previous years, the increase in resistant infections is noteworthy, leading to the need for new drugs. As the object of this project we will study the tris-(1.10-phenanthroline)iron(II) compound that represents a candidate for a new drug against tuberculosis, with promising studies in vitro in our laboratory. This project aims to determine the frequency of spontaneously resistant bacteria and to study them comparatively with other antibiotics used in the therapy in the search for a possible mechanism of action. In addition, in vivo assays will be performed to assess the oral bioavailability of the compound and the possible toxicity generated by it. (AU)
