Abstract

According to Jasper Griffin's seminal paper, the Homeric narrator may present a partial point of view when we consider his language. Starting from this approach and the application of narratology - specially the notions of narrator and focalizer - to Greek epic poetry, pioneered by Irene de Jong, this research proposes to discuss the evaluative comments made by the narrator, in particular, (1) how he shows himself to be a good connoisseur of the world of the gods while applying at the same time a human perspective to the narrative, and (2) how he leads the public to sympathize with certain characters and situations. This research will take in consideration how the characteristics of Homeric oral composition influence in the analysis of the narrator's voice. (AU)
