Abstract

This project aims to develop a cryogenic system for a UHV manipulator that is currently under development in our group and that will be installed inside a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The first operational prototype will be soon ready and it is part of a Jovem Pesquisador FAPESP Project que supports the installation of the microscope with the final purpose of studying the luminescence of nanostructured semiconductors. This manipulator holds a mirror (main light detection optics) at room temperature and the task of this project is to cool this mirror down to cryogenic temperatures similar to the STM itself, that is close to LHe or LN2. Despite its challenges, cooling the mirror allows the use of the STM at low temperatures without thermal drifts due to a warm mirror very close to a cold sample which is a considerable problem for long measurements.
