Prevalence of sarcopenia in women with breast cancer after mastectomy

Abstract

Sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by a progressive loss of muscle mass, this change is accountable for reduction of performance and physical strength. Commonly found in people with age greater than 60 years, sarcopenia has been associated with individuals that are diagnosticated by particular pathologic, as in the case of cancer patients. Breast cancer, is responsible for 25% new cases each year, affects diverse women, especially those who are older than 35 years. Breast cancer, when associated with progressive loss of muscle mass, increases the worst prognosis of the disease compared to individuals diagnosed with breast cancer and free of sarcopenia. Objective: Execute the evaluation, the prevalence of sarcopenia in women diagnosed with breast cancer after mastectomy, assessing skeletal muscle mass, muscular strength and physical performance. Methodology: A cross-sectional study will be carried out with patients attending the core of teaching, research and assistance in the rehabilitation of mastectomies (REMA), at Escola de Enfermagem de Ribeirão Preto (EERP) located at the University of São Paulo (USP) at Ribeirão Preto Campus -SP. They will be submitted to anthropometric measures, weight, height, BMI, some circumferences and skin folds. In addition, bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and dynamometry will be performed. Finally, the statistical analysis will be carried out to reach the conclusion of the main objective. (AU (AU)
