Abstract

The emergence of conservative thinking in Brazil in the early twentieth century came at a time of great social, cultural and political change, especially in a country newly freed from slavery and marked the end of a monarch system. Such thinking arises mainly in an attempt to forge a national identity, to explain what would be the country of great length and great diversity, often contradictory and authoritarian. The intellectuals, the bearers of this thought, who give geographical basis of their speeches, are concerned with scientific ideas, especially of German geography. Among the conservative intellectuals of the time, there is Vianna, the focus of this project, whose ideas will influence the national organization, especially during the Vargas era, which assumes the role within the government.
