Abstract

Antibiotics are widely used in human and veterinary medicine and only partially degraded in sewage treatment plants, which, even with their low concentrations in water (between ng/L and ¼g/L), creates the opportunity for multiple potential sources of contamination, such as domestic sewage treatment plants and extensive breeding sites. In addition, antibiotics have the ability to alter the microbial community structure, promoting the development of resistant human pathogens. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a bacteriostatic antibacterial agent that, from the synthesis of folic acid, interferes with susceptible bacteria. It presents a broad spectrum of activity that has been limited by the development of resistance in the target organisms, while being one of the most commonly found antibiotics in aquatic environments. Therefore, in addition to exploring the study of anaerobic biodegradation processes of this compound in anaerobic structured bed reactor, this project proposes the evaluation of the influence of three different inocula sources - sewage treatment plant sludge, brewery sludge and poultry slaughtering sludge - on the SMX removal and its impact on methanogenesis, since the inocula present different compositions.
