Abstract

The present work has as main objective the study of a large set of newspaper clippings, gathered over decades by Editora Abril and donated to the Documentation and Research Support Center (CEDAP), belonging to UNESP/Assis, in December 2011. This vast group was organized by the company into three main modules, namely personalities, institutions and subjects. The research is based on the latest series, which contains newspaper clippings related to crimes related to the Death Squad, a paramilitary group that had veiled support from the state and whose actions intensified during the period of the military dictatorship in Brazil. The militia, which concentrated its activities in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, but also extended to other parts of the country, intended to carry out a social prophylaxis: thugs and fringes should be eliminated from society. The press played an essential role in informing public opinion about the militia's existence and its acts, with communication vehicles that supported or condemned them. (AU)
