Abstract The continuous release of scientific publications in English requires special attention by researchers who, when writing their own articles or requiring their translations for specialized professionals, turn the study of the academic genre and scientific language a vast field to be described. Nowadays, the theoretical and methodological approach of Corpus Linguistics has favored the investigation of large amounts of texts with the aid of computational tools developed for the purpose of linguistic research. Based on this approach, we compiled a corpus of original scientific articles and their translations in the field of medicine. This corpus was the basis for the analysis of technical translator style and the compilation of three digital glossaries ((PAIVA, 2006; 2008; 2009). The emphasis was given to the analysis of language and terminology used by professional translators. One of the results showed that the use of passive voice, reported by Johns (1991) as unclear in abstracts published by Brazilian researchers did not present the same problem in the abstracts translated by professional translators. However, we observed verbs that are not used so often by researchers in international journals. For this reason, we propose a research that aims to analyze the academic language produced by Brazilians who have English as "additional language" (SWALES and FEAK, 2009), or rather, a language used for international publication. The main objective will be to raise collocational and colligational patterns that are not in accordance with the academic writing in English and, based on this study, offer solutions that involve the integration of the needs of the Brazilian writers from lexicographic data extracted from corpora and writing tools. In oder to do so, we will participate in the Collocaid Project (FRANKENBERG-GARCIA, LEW and ROBERTS, 2017), developed at the University of Surrey, England. | |
