Abstract

Black rot, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc), is considered the most important brassica disease in the world. Despite management efforts, its occurrence is common in brassica crops. Survival niches knowledge and Xcc dissemination mechanisms are extremely important for the efficient management of black rot. This research project aims at evaluating Xcc survival capacity in different ecological niches, as well as the dissemination potential of the bacterium by insects. Surveys will be carried out in brassica producing areas with a black rot occurrence background in some São Paulo State cities, in order to identify weed species that favor the epiphytic Xcc colonization, as well as bacterium host weeds. Endophytic weed colonization by Xcc will be evaluated in trials conducted in controlled conditions using rifampicin resistant isolates. Experiments will be performed under field conditions to evaluate Xcc survival in the phylloplane and rhizosphere of cultivated plants used in rotation with brassicas. The potential survival of Xcc in the rhizosphere of cabbage grown in different soil types will also be verified, as well as its dissemination by insects in greenhouse experiments with Bemisia tabaci (whitefly) and Myzus persicae (aphid). The results obtained here will be used to improve black rot management. (AU)
