Glycemic Index and glycemic load of a typical Brazilian meal: evaluation in healthy and diabetic subjects

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease characterized by an increase in blood glycemia. Glycemic Index (GI) and Glycemic Load (GL) are used in nutritional therapies to complement the treatment of DM. GI represents a classification of foods and beverages according to the carbohydrate profile and its effects on postprandial glycemia. However, most GI data give information of isolated foods, while data regarding the GI of a meals is scarce. In addition, theses studies use health subjects, instead of diabetics. Objective: to estimate the GI and GL of a typical Brazilian meal in type 2 diabetic patients and compare it with non-diabetic patients. Material and methods: this is a cross-sectional study conducted in a tertiary hospital. Thirty-two volunteers, aged between 18 and 59, will be recruited and allocated in two groups: Diabetics (GD), n = 16 and Control (GC), n = 16. The glycemic responses will be evaluated using 50g of available carbohydrate of the reference food (glucose), and of a typical Brazilian meal (tested meal). Blood samples will be taken up to 2 hours after the ingestion of the glucose and the meal, in order to analyse the glycemia. Statistical tests will be used to identify differences between the groups and the correlations between the variables of interest. (AU)
