This project lies in the area of designing tilting-pad journal bearings with higher load capacity and enhanced dynamic characteristics. In this project, we study the static and the dynamic characteristics of tilting-pad journal bearings with asymetric geometry. That means, the geometry and position of the pads are different to each other due to machining and assembling tolerances. First, we investigate numerically the characteristics of tilting-pad bearings with random geometry, both for the cases of load-on-pad and load-between-pads. Second, we will identify the design solutions that improve the system and those that degrade the system. Finally, we analyse the sensitivity of the design solution that improves the system to parameter variability and we compare the results with those obtained for the symetric bearing. (AU)
