Abstract

The presence of Cracidae is indispensable for environment maintenance as also the conservation of natural habitats is fundamental to keep this family species away from the categories of extinction. Sao Paulo state is losing its vegetal cover since the industrial revolution and because of this 40,3% of its birds species are on the Critically Endangered category (CR). The Sao Paulo state has almost 50% of all species of birds found in Brazil and this shows the importance of conservation for the maintenance of the fauna and flora, even as for quality of life of humans. For the five species of cracid birds found two of them are classified as vulnerable (VU) or Endangered (EN). This research focus on understanding the cracid birds occupancy in a protected area and its surrounding area in the north of São Paulo state, where were found Crax fasciolata and Penelope superciliaris, recorded using camera traps working 24h per day. The records obtained will be used for evaluating the importance of environment variables (cannopy, strems and feral dogs) in cracids species occupancy in the area. These information are important to adopt measures of conservation and management of cracid bird species that has been found in the area and there is hope to increases further the knowledge of bird species that hasn't been well studied and has an important meaning in the maintenance of forest ecosystems.
